All about me

My name is Isabel and I am a foodie. By "foodie," I mean I like to cook and to eat all different kinds of food. I love playing with my dog, Shiloh. When it snows, Shiloh and I run wildly around the back yard. I also love reading. Two books I've read lately and recommend are:

1. All the Lovely Bad Ones by M. Hahn
2. The White Giraffe by L. St. John

I have two brothers and one sister. I have a family of six. I have one pets in my family, a dog. My family is great to each other.

I love olives for a snack after school and the only thing I do not like is broccoli and meat. I eat all different kinds of food. For example, sushi. My favorite kind is sushi kadoe. Sushi kadoe is avocado, rice, salmon, and seaweed. I dislike lunch food at my school and always bring my own lunch to eat.

My favorite baseball team is the Chicago Cubs. The sports I play are softball and soccer.

I love acting. Once I was in a play at the college in my town and the only kid.

I have a lot of friends from different countries such as Thailand, Korea, and Mexico. There are a lot of people who are my friends and all are different. I am in fourth grade and I have a great teacher. Her name is Mrs. C. and what makes her a great teacher is that she has a terrific sense of humor. She reads well, too, and does good voices when she reads us stories.

I have a lot of fun having a blog. Enjoy!

PS: Check out my friend Jacob's blog at http://www.lifeonconcrete.blogspot.com/. You can also read about Jacob on my post about sushi!

Trump in Chicago

In September, I went to the Trump Hotel in Chicago. It was for my friend's birthday and she was turning 11. I went with her, her mom, my mom, and me. We drove to Chicago. When we were driving, we didn't know where to go until my friend's mom Shani found out where to get in. When we drove up, the doors were opened by people in suits. They opened the door of the hotel for us and, when we got inside, the people at the front desk gave us very warm, wet towels which smelled a bit like mint. They told my friend Greta that we could go sit down on the couch. There were magazines that were wrapped in leather and my mom pulled out her camera. We played along and made funny faces.

Finally we went to the elevator. There were five elevators. Greta pressed the button and DING! We got in the elevator and there were about fifty buttons you could press and I pressed the button for the twenty-seventh floor. There were mirrors on two sides of the elevator and there were built in paintings that were not framed or anything.

When we got up to the twenty-seventh floor we went into our room. There were two king beds and both had a bench with a big soft fluffy cushion at the end. There was a button that you would hold down and then the curtains would open and close. There was a flat screen TV that had tons of movies on it. In the bathroom there was a TV on the mirror and a remote was in the bathroom drawer. A list of all the channels was in the drawer, too. Whenever we went into the bathroom we would turn on the screen. It was not like a overhead projector -- it was built into the actual mirror. There was also a built-in shower.

Later, after we settled in, the door bell rang. We answered it and it was room service with a cake for Greta and there were two cookies on plates. On the plates, written in chocolate and in cursive, was "Greta" and "Isabella." It was a wonderful cake and there were it little pieces of gold, edible chocolate squares. There was also warm milk.

Over in the kitchen area, there were all special treats and some of them were popcorn, gummy bears, and little bottles of water. In the fridge under the counter, there were different things like Coke-a-cola, 7Up, Crush, Pom Wonderful, V8 juice, and different other drinks also. Over near the window there was a table that had all different bottles of water. One was called "Bling" water and had things that looked like diamonds glued on the bottle. One bottle was twenty-five dollars. It would cost money if you opened a bottle of water or opened a bag of something to eat from the kitchen. What I am trying to say is it is not free if you take something to eat or drink from the counter or fridge.

After we were all settled in we got ready to eat at the John Hancock building. Greta went in the bathroom first and I could hear her watching the TV. While she was getting ready in the bathroom I got my clothes all ready and my hairbrush and spray to take in the bathroom. I also got my camera ready because I was going to take it to the tower. When Greta was done I went in the bathroom and got all ready. When I came out my mom gave me her curling iron to plug into the wall.

When my Mom was done in the bathroom, Greta's mom Shani went in and when she was done we headed to the elevators. We waited a pretty long time because now we were on a high storey. When we went got in the elevator we pressed the button and DING! We were down in a jiffy. We got out the door and the people who let us into the hotel led us out of the hotel. The man called a taxi and we were off to the John Hancock building.

When we arrived there, we were so excited that I was jumping up and down. We walked through the main floor until we reached the elevator. When we got there there was a whole line of people waiting just for drinks. We felt bad for them because we had reservations for dinner. They were only getting drinks. When the people who were up came down because they were done eating we went upstairs in the same elevator. We did not take the stairs because there are ninety-six floors. (The 96th floor is the restaurant.)

When we got upstairs we got seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant and it was not what we had hoped for because it was not near a window. Shani is very determined to get what she had spoken about, paid for, and hoped for so she got up and spoke with the manager. Then we got a great view at the window looking at the lake. When the waitress came we were all ready. I ordered the exact same thing as Greta did. A Shirley Temple, a special salad, and spaghetti. When our Shirley Temples arrived to our table, I saw there were two cherries and a little poker that the cherry would hang from. The poker was a mini John Hancock Tower!

Then, that moment, I pulled out my camera and took a shot of the city. We were talking about how we could see pools on top of the buildings, but no one was swimming because it was too cold. Very soon the food arrived and we ate and ate. The salad had mozzarella, tomatoes, watercress, and some salty purple beet ice and I am not sure what it was....but it was delicious. By the end of the night, Greta and I had seven Shirley Temples. My Mom and Shani had a glass of chardonnay (which is white wine).

When we were done with dinner we talked and we didn't know it there was a flamin' birthday cake coming! It said "Greta" again and Shani said, "This is not your last birthday cake, I am sure." We all laughed at that. Soon we sang happy birthday and all the people near us sang too. After that, we cut the cake and it was so creamy I could not even tell you. When we were eating the cake, Greta and I got another Shirley Temple and after that we were stuffed. For a token of the Hancock building, we took the pokers. When we were done we paid for the dinner and headed for the elevator. Since the building was ninety-six floors it took a pretty long time to get down. I was so happy I just could not stand it.

When we got in the elevator it was crowded and I was in the corner. My mom jokes every time in elevators by pretending I am not there. She smushes me in the corner and asks, "Where is Isabel? I guess we left her behind." It was kind of embarrassing at first because there were other people in the elevator, but actually funny so then I laughed. When we got down I could only hear a little. I didn't know what the others were talking about. My ears were popping! When I got my hearing back I didn't question to myself any more what things sounded like around me. We walked around Shani leading the way.

Finally I saw myself near Macy's that was in the same mall that had the American Girl Doll store. We were going up the escalator when I saw something flicker around me. I looked over and there was water squirting up around me. It came from the middle of the two escalators that were going either down or up. I put out my hand and felt a cold, moist, clear thing in my hand and I thought it was beautiful when it came up again and again.

When we got to the next floor up we saw all these different types of shoes in all different sizes. Greta followed me to the high heels and I called it "the really high high heels" area and I saw a pair that looked like the brightest pink you have ever seen in your whole life and the highest high heels you have ever seen in the history of high heels.

I thought if anybody tries on those high heels they are going to fall over and never stand up again without taking the shoes off. Then we picked out some shoes we would wear which were not high heels and mostly sandals. After our moms looked around we were ready to leave and Greta on the way out got some boots. Shani wanted to stop at the makeup store to get some things. So we looked around and just joked practically the whole time. When she was done we walked to the Hello Kitty store and everything there was Hello Kitty things.

Then we went to go through the mall to go to the front. Shani caught us a cab and we headed back to the hotel. When we got there we got on our swimming suits and went to the swimming pool floor. There was the spa right next to it. We went to the locker rooms and put our things in the locker. There were awesome locks that you type in the number you make up.When we went through all the doors we finally made it to the pool. Greta and I jumped in and our parents went to the side and talked. In the pool there are these huge windows and through them was the whole city. In the air were fireworks and I was joking that it was for Greta's birthday. I made up a game where you run through all the doors to the locker. You need to open your locker and then close it again. It took about five minutes to do it and then you had to high five the other person who is taking a swim.

Then Shani ordered room service and she got fries, cookies, milk, and some chocolate. When we got kicked out by the pool manager and we went back up to our room. We got into our pajamas and we got out the nail polish Greta brought. We painted our nails and watched Night at the Museum 2. It was a good movie. When it was done we went to bed and I fell asleep right away.

In the morning Shani woke up first. I woke up second and then the others woke up slowly. We were pretty hungry so Greta, Shani, and I got ready. My mom had to work on her computer she brought so we would get her breakfast for her after. The restaurant was called Sixteen because it was on the sixteenth floor. When we went inside I ordered a bagel, fruit, and a scrambled egg. It was delicious. I did not finish my bagel so I brought it up to my mom. When Greta and I went to the bathroom we saw all the fancy things in it. One thing that was fancy was on a new roll of new toilet paper there would be a triangle paper that had a T for Trump. also you would use hand towels instead of big towels or paper towels. When we went out our food was there and we began to eat. When we were done we went to the elevators.

When we got to the twenty-seventh floor and we got to our room I started getting ready to go to the American Girl Doll store to look around and get lunch. When my mom was done eating her breakfast and everyone was dressed we headed out. We got a cab to take us to Michigan Avenue. There was a Disney store when we got out. So we went in. There was this huge stuffed animal Eeyore and Greta and I thought it was so cute. We ended up not buying anything but we had fun looking around. When we went to the sidewalk again and went into the Gap. We looked in it and Shani needed some jeans for that day so she bought some. When we got out we headed to the American Girl Doll store for lunch. When we got in, our reservations were not until twelve thirty so we just looked around a little bit. Then we went to the second floor. (That is a whole other story.)

When we got up we looked at all the cool sets. There were all these cool sets that had different themes. Then came the American Girl dolls. They are all for sale if you want them. That is a treat. Then a lot of people were standing in line. If your American Girl doll's hair gets messed up, then the people brush or replace the hair. Then came different shops. For example, a bakery with a baker who would give you treats. Then came the restaurant where we were going to have lunch. There were people to make sure that you were coming and we signed in.

When we were allowed to come in, it was beautiful inside. It was full of flowers. Around it there were tons of trees. I could not believe that that was Michigan Avenue. Then a waiter came and he gave us these chairs that would connect to the table for our American Girl dolls. Then he came back and we ordered. I ordered a pasta with this brilliant Alfredo sauce. Then I ordered a Shirley Temple for a drink. When my mom starts to want pictures, she really is having fun. When the food came it was fantastic. The Shirley Temple was great too. When we were finished eating all the waiters and waitresses come out with birthday cakes. The two kinds were dirt cake which was chocolate pudding with Oreos crushed in it. We dug into it and there was gummy worms in it. It was so so so good. When we were done, they gave us these goodie bags. There was one book, a flower, and a notepad. Then we headed out into where we were before.... Then we looked around some more and Greta got a American Girl doll bag for her birthday. Then we went to Michigan Avenue and got a cab to go back to the hotel. When we got there we packed and it was time to go home.

Then we told the people the front of the hotel that we had to go home and they got our car. When we got in I fell right asleep and when I woke up I was at my very own home. Then I hugged the whole six of my family, including my mom even though I'd just been with her. And because she let me come to this special event. Then when I got home I had a three hour nap. I had a very fun time with everyone.

I had a lot of fun at the Trump Hotel. I highly recommend it.

Lover of Sushi

My favorite food is sushi. The first time I had sushi was when my mom came home from Whole Foods Market on a Friday night. The sushi was in little mini trays with dipping sauce. She just got it for my dad and her. She usually gets salmon rolls and spicy tuna rolls. I asked to try some and she said, "Yes." I ate all the rolls before they looked back down at the trays. She and my Dad said, "Wow."

The next time I had sushi was at Sushi House. It was soooo good. There were lots of kinds of sushi and a kind of miso soup. The booth was a private area and you took off your shoes and sat cross-legged. The drink was really good. It was like Sprite, but Asian. You had to click a marble through the bottlecap so it would open.

Another place where I have had sushi is at Benihana. I went with my friend Jacob, Nick, and their mom Kathy. It was their last night visiting us from Manhattan so we had a big night. I had Philadelphia sushi. It has cream cheese, raw fish (salmon), avocado, rice, and seaweed.

I like sushi because it's Asian and I've always loved Asian foods. I also like using chopsticks. The seaweed tastes chewy and awesome. I love soy sauce even if sodium is bad for you. (They should make some soy sauce that doesn't have any salt in it.) Salmon rolls are my favorite. I've always loved raw salmon.

Even if you've never tried sushi -- this is why you should try it: It's delicious and healthy and if you try different foods, you could end up traveling the world eating good food. Like foodies like me.

Hot Lunch at My School

Gross! Hot lunch is so disgusting! There are foot-long hot dogs that are purple. The macaroni is wet with no cheese and only noodles. There are also Sloppy Joes -- I once saw the lunch lady pour the meat out of plastic bag when I got to the lunchroom early. (Don't remind me!) They put the meat in burger buns that are half frozen. Sloppy Joes smell so gross and are actually spicy. There is also "bun and a patty" and make your own pizza and also make your own nachos. The "make your own pizza" is a pita with cheese and pepperoni and cold tomato sauce that is kept in the freezer. (At the beginning of the day, they take it out so it unfreezes.) The "make your own nachos" has cold cheese and it sometimes comes with ranch dressing. (Yuck!)

What I bring for lunch is a pack of olives and carrots and some dark chocolate, a container with salad, homemade trail mix, and so many other things depending on the day. The main thing I like to have in my lunch is a mustard, lettuce, tomato, mayo, Swiss cheese sandwich.

Sometimes I bring in a thermos with leftover pasta after my family goes to Noodles and Company the day before. I like the "Pasta Fresca" with extra spinach, tofu, and feta cheese. (You can get it other ways, too.)

Once when I went to Panera Bread Company for dinner, before my brother's baseball game, I ordered my favorite sandwich (see above!) and they gave me a sandwich that was salami, ham, and turkey plain. I am a (semi) vegetarian, so I gave it to my friend's mom and they loved it so much. It seemed to me they tore it to pieces while they ate it.

The daughter said to her mom after a few minutes, "You already ate it all?"

And the Mom opened up her mouth and showed the last bit of sandwich and said, "No!"

The best place where I get my favorite (Swiss cheese) sandwich is called Shane's Deli.

I've proved my point! Hot lunch is very gross. There are a lot of good places to get your lunch, not including the school cafeteria!
